A 59-year-old government school headmaster in Bengaluru has been arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after a minor student was allegedly sexually abused and later found pregnant.

The accused, identified as Chandraiah, was serving as the headmaster of a government higher primary school in Srirampura and was reportedly nearing retirement.

Case surfaced after student found pregnant

According to police, the alleged abuse had been taking place for nearly a year. The matter came to light after the minor girl was found to be around one-and-a-half months pregnant.

Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s family, Srirampura police registered an FIR on May 22 under relevant sections of the POCSO Act. The accused was later arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

Officials said the survivor has been provided medical treatment and counselling support.

Child shifted to rehabilitation facility

Members of the Child Welfare Committee, Bengaluru North, have temporarily shifted the girl to a government rehabilitation facility on Hosur Road for protection and care during the investigation.

Police said the District Child Protection Unit has also been directed to coordinate with authorities and ensure continued support for the child.

The incident has triggered fresh concerns over student safety and monitoring mechanisms within educational institutions.

Similar cases raise concern

The report also referred to another incident earlier this year in Bengaluru’s Byatarayanapura area, where a minor student escaped an alleged assault attempt by a physical education teacher inside a government school.

Police said the student managed to flee and alert her family, following which the accused teacher was suspended after a complaint was filed.
