The Bengaluru traffic police have introduced new restrictions for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to ease traffic congestion on Saturdays. Starting August 3, 2024, HGVs will be prohibited from 10 am to 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 9 pm on Saturdays. This decision follows an extensive analysis of traffic patterns from January 1 to June 30, 2024. According to MN Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), these new timings address peak hours that typically start in the afternoon on Saturdays. The goal is to reduce congestion during these times, ensuring smoother flow for regular commuters and lessening the strain on the city’s traffic infrastructure.
Despite the potential benefits, some truck drivers and vehicle owners have expressed concerns about the inconvenience caused by the new regulations. They argue that banning heavy vehicles may not effectively reduce traffic congestion. However, the regulation aims to balance the needs of heavy vehicle operators with the necessity of managing urban traffic.
The existing rule prohibiting HGV movement between 7 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 10 pm on weekdays remains in effect. Authorities anticipate that these measures will significantly improve the city’s traffic flow during the busiest times of the day, providing relief to commuters and enhancing overall road safety. The traffic police will continue to monitor the situation and adjust as necessary to ensure optimal traffic management.
