In a startling case of corruption within the Bengaluru police force, Syed Sarfraz Ahmed, a man previously known as a police informant, has been arrested for allegedly extorting money from several officers. According to a report, Ahmed is believed to have extorted funds from at least 20 policemen across the city.
Ahmed was an informant for the DJ Halli, RT Nagar, and Shivajinagar police stations. His role as an informant allowed him to build strong connections with various police officers. This network, however, appears to have facilitated his illicit activities.
The situation unravelled when Ahmed approached the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) with a complaint against the Shivajinagar police. He alleged that the police had unlawfully detained a man named Irshad without a formal complaint. Shortly thereafter, Ahmed contacted the Shivajinagar police, attempting to negotiate a deal to withdraw his complaint from the SHRC.
Suspicious of Ahmed’s intentions, the police devised a plan to catch him in the act. They agreed to his demands for money and arranged a meeting at a designated location. When Ahmed arrived to collect the money, the entire transaction was covertly recorded. Additionally, the police secured CCTV footage of Irshad creating a disturbance at a restaurant, which provided further evidence against Ahmed’s claims.
With the evidence in hand, the police arrested Ahmed and charged him with extortion. He was subsequently remanded in judicial custody. The investigation revealed that Ahmed had been involved in extorting money from over 20 police officers, highlighting a serious breach of trust and corruption within the police force.
This incident has raised significant concerns about the integrity of law enforcement officers in Bengaluru. The police department has promised a thorough review and has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing any internal corruption issues.
