Bengaluru: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday welcomed the Centre’s decision to include caste enumeration in the general census, calling it a “major victory” for the opposition’s sustained demand. However, he warned that without adequate funding and a clear timeline, the move risks being reduced to a “political gimmick.”

Speaking to reporters, the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha urged the government to act sincerely and swiftly. “There is no fund allocation yet. How can a survey happen without money?” he asked, stressing that a firm timeline was essential. He added, “Let it be completed within two to three months or within a fixed period — whatever the government decides, but soon.”

Kharge noted that Congress and other opposition parties had consistently called for a caste census. “I had written to the Centre two years ago. Our party held protests across the country. Now we are glad that our demand is being met,” he said.

While supporting the initiative, he criticized the BJP and RSS, calling their stance on reservation and social justice hypocritical. “They accuse us of being against a caste census. If that were true, why would I demand one in writing? They’re trying to confuse the public and take credit.”

Kharge brushed aside claims that the Centre’s move was election-driven, particularly in light of the upcoming Bihar polls. “If the decision is good, I welcome it — regardless of timing,” he said, noting that Rahul Gandhi played a key role in building pressure.
