Bengaluru: Heavy rainfall struck Bengaluru on Thursday evening, marking the beginning of the city’s pre-monsoon spell. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier cautioned about severe showers across Karnataka during the summer season.

In a tragic incident, a large tree toppled onto an auto-rickshaw, resulting in the death of its driver. The victim, identified as 45-year-old Mahesh from Ittamadu, had parked near a bus stop on Kathriguppe Main Road around 7:30 pm to shield himself from the downpour when disaster struck. According to police, the tree came crashing down without warning, fatally injuring him.

The intense rains created chaos across the city, leading to flooding in several localities. Streets turned into streams, severely affecting vehicular movement. Social media platforms were inundated with videos and complaints highlighting submerged roads and stranded commuters. A resident commented, “Just ten minutes of rain and our roads transform into rivers.”

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) deployed emergency crews to tackle blocked drains and waterlogged zones. Officials reported that floodwaters near HSR Layout were cleared by the Bommanahalli zonal team.

A weather enthusiast running the ‘Bengaluru Weather’ account on X shared IMD data indicating the city received 32.2 mm of rainfall in April. April 2025 also recorded an average high of 33.48°C — the lowest for the month in ten years.

Authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant, avoid unnecessary outings during storms, and follow safety advisories.
