Amid growing concerns over deforestation and shrinking urban green cover, a retired mechanical engineer in Bengaluru has created a remarkable rooftop rainforest that is inspiring nature lovers online.
Venkataraman, a Bengaluru resident, transformed the terrace of his five-storey home into a biodiversity-rich green oasis that now resembles a slice of the Western Ghats in the middle of the city.
Rooftop turned into mini forest
Spread across 600 sq ft, the terrace rainforest was carefully developed over six years and today houses more than 100 varieties of plants along with over 17 species of birds, butterflies and stingless bees.
The rooftop features cherry trees, dragonfruits, avocados, red bananas, citrons, curry leaves, coffee seeds and several native plants. Videos shared online by The Better India have left viewers amazed by the transformation.
What started as a few potted plants in memory of his mother gradually evolved into a thriving urban rainforest built across three levels.
Natural cooling amid rising heat
According to reports, the green space has significantly improved the microclimate around the house. Even during peak summer, temperatures on the terrace reportedly remain 3 to 4 degrees lower compared to surrounding areas.
The lush greenery has also helped improve air quality while creating a safe habitat for birds, butterflies and pollinators inside the busy city.
Interestingly, Venkataraman said heavy rains and storms did not damage the plants as feared, thanks to a drumstick tree whose roots helped hold the ecosystem together.
Inspiring urban sustainability
The inspiring initiative has drawn praise online, with many calling it a powerful example of sustainable urban living in rapidly expanding cities like Bengaluru.
At a time when concrete structures continue replacing green spaces, the rooftop rainforest stands as a reminder of how individuals can contribute towards restoring biodiversity and reducing urban heat
