A long-running monetary dispute between family members erupted into violence in Bengaluru’s Viveknagar on July 1, when a man attempted to set a house ablaze while relatives were still inside. The shocking act, captured on CCTV, occurred around 5:30 PM.

The residence, owned by Venkataramani and her son Satish, became the target of this arson attempt. The accused has been identified as Subramani, a relative of the victims.

The feud reportedly began nearly 7–8 years ago when Parvati, another relative, borrowed ₹5 lakh from Venkataramani for her daughter Mahalakshmi’s wedding. Despite repeated reminders, the amount was never returned. The tension resurfaced during a recent family wedding, where Venkataramani once again asked for repayment.

This sparked a series of heated exchanges, leading to threats and alleged plans to attack.

While Satish was away at work in Domlur, he received a call from his mother reporting that she and his brother Mohan Das were inside the house when someone doused the main door, shoe rack, and bedroom window with petrol and set them on fire.

Alert neighbours acted quickly, dousing the flames and helping those inside. Though no one was injured, the front of the house and its windows were damaged.

CCTV footage shows Subramani entering the premises at 5:21 PM with a petrol bottle, lighting the fire, and almost getting caught in the blaze himself.

An FIR has been registered at Viveknagar Police Station, and an investigation is currently underway.
