The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is considering the use of advanced Gobbler machines to improve waste collection and road cleanliness across the city.

GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao on Wednesday witnessed a demonstration of the smart litter-picking machine at Commercial Street and directed officials to conduct trial runs and submit a detailed performance report.

Smart technology for cleaner streets

According to GBA officials, the Gobbler machine uses a powerful suction system to collect roadside waste, including dust, plastic covers, paper, dry leaves, glass fragments and small wood pieces.

The machine is equipped with a 240-litre waste collection container, dust filter, joystick-operated controls, flashing warning lights, LED lamps for night operations, reverse warning alarms and fire safety equipment.

Officials said collected waste can be stored and later disposed of using biodegradable bags.

Trial runs planned in busy areas

Bengaluru Central City Corporation Commissioner Rajendra Cholan said the machines will be tested in some of the city’s busiest locations, including K R Market, Russell Market, Commercial Street, M G Road, Church Street and other roads in the Central Business District (CBD).

The machine also features a 12-litre water tank and pressure pipe cleaning system, enabling more effective maintenance of public spaces.

Single-operator system

One of the key advantages of the Gobbler machine is that it can be operated by a single person. The operator can either stand on the machine while moving through streets or walk alongside it during cleaning operations.

Officials believe the technology could help improve waste management efficiency while reducing manual effort in maintaining cleaner roads and public spaces.

The GBA will take a decision on wider deployment after evaluating the results of the trial runs.
