Bengaluru: The much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mumbai is expected to begin operations on October 10 or 11, bringing South India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper service closer to launch.

The proposed overnight service will connect Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) Bengaluru with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai, providing a new premium rail option between Karnataka and Maharashtra.

However, the exact launch date has not yet received the final notification from the Railway Board. Recent reports indicate that the service could commence on October 10 or 11, subject to the final approval and operational schedule.

The service has been awaited for several months after the Railway Ministry approved the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper earlier this year.

Second Vande Bharat Sleeper service in India

The Bengaluru-Mumbai service is set to become the second Vande Bharat Sleeper service in India.

The first Vande Bharat Sleeper service began operations between Howrah and Kamakhya in January 2026. The Bengaluru-Mumbai train will therefore mark the expansion of the sleeper version to another major inter-city route.

The new service has been developed using technology from Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, with the trainsets manufactured by Bengaluru-based BEML.

The train has been designed for overnight journeys, combining sleeping accommodation with the higher-speed operating characteristics associated with the Vande Bharat series.

Two 16-coach rakes prepared

South Western Railway has received two Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets for the Bengaluru-Mumbai route.

According to reports, the two rakes have 16 coaches each and have undergone testing and inspections ahead of their proposed operation. The rakes were manufactured by BEML in Bengaluru under the programme led by ICF.

The availability of two rakes is important because an overnight service operating in both directions requires one trainset to operate in each direction as part of the regular rotation.

The trains have been undergoing the required procedures before being introduced for passenger service.

Bengaluru-Mumbai route to get overnight connection

The proposed Vande Bharat Sleeper is intended to provide an overnight connection between the two major cities.

Earlier reports indicated that the train could operate through Kalaburagi and Solapur, with the journey expected to take around 15 hours depending on the final timetable and route.

The route is significant for both business and leisure travellers. Bengaluru is a major technology and commercial centre, while Mumbai is India’s financial capital. A faster overnight train could provide an alternative to existing long-distance rail services between the two cities.

At present, direct rail connectivity between Bengaluru and Mumbai includes services such as the Udyan Express, which has a substantially longer scheduled journey.

The new sleeper service is expected to offer passengers the convenience of travelling overnight while arriving at their destination the following day.

Launch has faced several delays

The proposed service has been delayed multiple times since its approval.

The Railway Ministry approved the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper in April 2026. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had announced that the service would be introduced between KSR Bengaluru and CSMT Mumbai.

The trainsets subsequently reached Bengaluru and underwent testing and other procedures. In July, reports said the second Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset in India had arrived in Bengaluru ahead of its expected launch.

A September report said the launch had faced further delays, with the service yet to begin despite earlier expectations.

The latest indication of an October 10 or 11 launch therefore represents another expected timeline rather than a final confirmed date.

Railway Board notification awaited

While the operational preparations have progressed, the final start date remains subject to notification.

The Railway Board is expected to formally announce the service schedule, including departure and arrival timings, stoppages and frequency.

This is important for passengers because the proposed October 10 or 11 dates should not be treated as confirmed booking dates until the railway authorities publish the official timetable.

Once the notification is issued, passengers will also be able to obtain details about fares, reservation availability and the exact composition of the service.

Bengaluru to become key Vande Bharat Sleeper base

The introduction of the service is also significant for South Western Railway’s future sleeper operations.

Indian Railways is developing dedicated maintenance infrastructure for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains in Bengaluru. A dedicated depot is planned at Thanisandra, with land acquisition underway for a facility covering approximately 13.95 hectares. The project is intended to provide specialised maintenance infrastructure for the longer and heavier sleeper trainsets.

The depot will eventually provide a dedicated base for sleeper train maintenance in Bengaluru, strengthening the city’s role in the operation of these trains.

The facility is also strategically located close to BEML’s Bengaluru operations, where Vande Bharat trainsets are manufactured.

What passengers can expect

Unlike the existing daytime Vande Bharat trains, the sleeper version is designed specifically for long-distance overnight travel.

The train’s sleeper configuration allows passengers to rest during the journey rather than remain in conventional seating throughout the trip.

The introduction of the Bengaluru-Mumbai service is therefore expected to provide a different travel option for passengers who currently depend on conventional overnight trains, flights or road transport.

The service could particularly benefit business travellers and passengers who prefer to travel overnight and reach Mumbai or Bengaluru in the morning.

Important connectivity for Karnataka and Maharashtra

The Bengaluru-Mumbai corridor is one of the important long-distance travel routes connecting Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The proposed train is expected to improve premium rail connectivity between the two States while adding another option for passengers travelling between their major urban centres.

Railway enthusiasts and passenger groups have been seeking the early introduction of the service since its approval. Earlier reports noted that two trainsets had been positioned in Bengaluru while operational and administrative requirements were being completed.

With the latest expected October launch window, attention now shifts to the Railway Board’s formal announcement.

Final date and timetable awaited

The Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper has moved through approval, manufacturing, testing and operational preparation stages.

The remaining key step for passengers is the official notification confirming the start date and timetable.

If the October 10 or 11 timeline is approved, the service will become South India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper operation and the second such service in the country.

Until the Railway Board issues the final notification, passengers should wait for the official schedule before making travel plans based on the proposed launch dates.

Conclusion

The Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to begin operations around October 10 or 11, subject to final Railway Board approval. The 16-coach trainsets have been prepared for the route, which will connect SMVT Bengaluru with Mumbai CSMT as South India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper service.
