The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has announced a one-time opportunity to regularise hoardings and LED advertisement boards under the newly notified Greater Bengaluru Area (Advertisement) Rules, 2025.

The deadline for advertisers to apply under this scheme is April 13.

One-time relief for unauthorised hoardings

Under the new rules, owners of legacy hoardings and LED self-advertisement boards—previously considered illegal—can now convert them into authorised commercial billboards by paying the prescribed fees.

Applications can be submitted either at respective city corporation offices or directly at the GBA headquarters, as per the official notification.

Visible resurgence across the city

The impact of the announcement is already evident, with several hoardings that had remained unused for years now back in operation. These structures had earlier fallen silent due to strict restrictions and enforcement measures.

The reopening of this window has led to a noticeable increase in advertising displays across key parts of Bengaluru.

Revenue boost expected

Civic authorities view the move as a potential source of significant revenue. By bringing unauthorised hoardings into the legal framework, the GBA aims to streamline outdoor advertising while generating funds for urban development.

Officials believe that formalising these structures will also improve regulatory oversight.

Concerns over urban aesthetics

However, the initiative has raised concerns among urban planners and residents. Experts warn that a sudden rise in billboard density could affect the city’s visual appeal and contribute to cluttered streetscapes.

There are also apprehensions about potential safety risks if structures are not properly monitored and maintained.

Balancing growth and regulation

The development highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing commercial interests with urban planning standards in a rapidly growing city like Bengaluru.

As the April 13 deadline approaches, authorities are expected to closely monitor applications and ensure compliance with safety and zoning norms.
