Bengaluru: Delivery executives and gig workers using Bengaluru’s busy Outer Ring Road (ORR) could soon benefit from dedicated rest areas equipped with modern amenities under the Karnataka government’s proposed ₹450 crore redevelopment project.
Prepared by Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE), the proposal aims to transform the 17.1-km stretch between Central Silk Board Junction and KR Puram into a modern, multimodal mobility corridor that caters to commuters, pedestrians, cyclists and gig workers.
Dedicated gig hubs for delivery partners
A key feature of the proposal is the creation of gig hubs beneath flyovers and other underutilised public spaces along the corridor.
These hubs will offer shaded seating, mobile charging lockers, free Wi-Fi, drinking water facilities and solar-powered charging stations, allowing delivery executives and other gig workers to rest comfortably between assignments.
The plan also includes dedicated micro-mobility docks and organised autorickshaw lay-bys with a digital queue management system, making the corridor more efficient and commuter-friendly.
Smarter public spaces and better transport
The redevelopment proposal also includes smart bus stops with real-time bus arrival displays, CCTV surveillance and charging points for electronic devices.
Unused spaces beneath flyovers are expected to be converted into food courts, recreational zones, market spaces and public gathering areas, helping improve safety while discouraging illegal activities.
To promote sustainable mobility, the project proposes dedicated bus lanes, wider footpaths and cycle tracks wherever feasible.
Project to benefit lakhs of commuters
Officials estimate that nearly 6.42 lakh employees work in offices along the ORR technology corridor, while around 3.38 lakh vehicles use the stretch every day.
The redevelopment will cover six major junctions and is designed to improve mobility, enhance commuter convenience and support Bengaluru’s rapidly growing technology and gig economy workforce.
If implemented, the project is expected to significantly improve the daily experience of commuters while creating more organised and inclusive public infrastructure.
