Bengaluru: A seven-year-old pet dog died after being hit by a car during a late-night walk in the city’s Banashankari area on November 1. Police have registered a case against the car driver following a complaint by the dog’s owner.
The dog, named Sakhi, suffered severe injuries in the collision and later succumbed to them. The incident occurred near Hosakerehalli when the owner’s mother was taking the dog for a walk and crossing the road.
According to the complaint, the car allegedly struck the dog while it was being taken across the road. The owner, Deeksha K., alleged that the driver was speeding, driving recklessly and using a mobile phone at the time of the incident.
Police register case against driver
Following the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 281 and 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 281 deals with rash driving or riding on a public way, while Section 325 relates to mischief by killing or maiming an animal.
Police have issued a notice to the car owner in connection with the incident. Further investigation is under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and examine the allegations made by the dog’s owner.
Incident raises concerns over road safety
The death of Sakhi has once again drawn attention to the safety of pets and pedestrians on Bengaluru’s roads, particularly during late-night walks.
Pet owners regularly take their dogs outdoors for exercise and routine walks. The incident highlights the risks faced by pedestrians and animals when vehicles are allegedly driven at high speeds or without due care in residential neighbourhoods.
The investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events and determine responsibility for the collision.
