Bengaluru: Bengaluru could soon witness a major overhaul in traffic management, with the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) proposing phased restrictions on the movement of heavy and medium vehicles to reduce congestion and improve road safety across the city.
Under the proposal, heavy and medium vehicles will be classified into five categories, with separate entry and movement timings based on vehicle type and purpose.
Five-category system proposed
According to the proposal, the BTP plans to regulate the entry and exit timings of heavy and medium vehicles in a phased manner to minimise traffic bottlenecks, particularly during peak commuting hours.
One of the key recommendations is to restrict All India Permit (AIP) private buses operating inter-State services from entering Bengaluru between 8 am and 10 pm.
Heavy vehicles may face complete daytime ban
The proposal also recommends a complete restriction on the movement of heavy vehicles weighing more than 16 tonnes within the city during specified hours. Authorities believe the move will help ease congestion on major roads and improve traffic flow.
Officials said the categorisation of vehicles would enable more efficient traffic management while ensuring that essential transport services continue to operate with minimal disruption.
Move aimed at reducing congestion
The proposed restrictions are part of the Traffic Police’s broader efforts to tackle Bengaluru’s worsening traffic congestion, which has been aggravated by rapid urban growth and increasing vehicle numbers.
If implemented, the revised rules are expected to significantly impact freight operators, logistics companies and private inter-State bus operators, who may need to alter schedules to comply with the new timings.
The proposal is currently under consideration, and further details regarding implementation and exemptions are expected after consultations with stakeholders.
