Bengaluru: As the city prepares to welcome the New Year, the Bengaluru city police have activated a dedicated war room on Brigade Road to ensure strict enforcement of law and order, with a special focus on women’s safety and zero tolerance towards harassment, nuisance and unruly behaviour during celebrations.

High-tech surveillance in party zones

With thousands of people expected to gather in popular party and commercial zones, the police have put in place an extensive surveillance mechanism using high-definition CCTV cameras and real-time monitoring systems. Officials said the surveillance network will primarily cover Brigade Road, MG Road and Church Street, areas that traditionally witness dense crowds during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

A senior police officer said the CCTV network in these locations has been significantly strengthened over the years, enabling clear, high-resolution visuals that allow officers to identify even minor incidents. “The feeds will be monitored continuously in high definition. This will help us track crowd movement, spot suspicious behaviour early and intervene before a situation escalates,” the officer said.

Real-time monitoring and rapid response

The war room on Brigade Road will function as the nerve centre for monitoring celebrations across the central business district. Specially trained police personnel will be stationed inside the facility to watch live footage round the clock and coordinate with teams on the ground.

If any act of harassment, assault, indecent behaviour or public nuisance is noticed on camera, the war room team will immediately alert the nearest patrol unit or foot patrol. Officers have been instructed to reach the spot without delay and take swift action.

Police officials said the response mechanism is designed to be both preventive and corrective. “Our intention is not just to react after an incident occurs, but to prevent such incidents from happening at all. Visible surveillance itself acts as a strong deterrent,” an official said.

Zero tolerance for harassment

The city police reiterated that there will be zero tolerance towards harassment, especially of women. Any complaint or visual confirmation of misbehaviour, including stalking, inappropriate gestures, verbal abuse or physical harassment, will be dealt with strictly.

“If any woman or young girl faces trouble, police will intervene instantly and provide protection on the spot,” a senior officer said. Those found indulging in offensive or unruly conduct will be removed from the celebration zones and taken to the police station for further legal action.

Police have made it clear that such individuals will not be allowed to remain in the area or continue participating in celebrations. Cases will be registered under relevant provisions of law, depending on the nature of the offence.

Ground teams on high alert

In addition to surveillance teams, police personnel will be deployed on foot patrols, mobile patrols and two-wheeler units across the city. Officers will be stationed at strategic junctions, entry and exit points, and near pubs, restaurants and event venues.

Special teams trained to handle crowd control and women’s safety will be on standby to respond to distress calls. Police said coordination between the war room and field units will ensure that officers can reach any reported location within minutes.

Officials added that the police control room will also remain fully functional, allowing citizens to seek help through emergency helplines if required.

Part of a larger security plan

The war room initiative is part of a broader security plan announced by the city police and the state government for New Year celebrations. Earlier, authorities had said that over 20,000 police personnel would be deployed across Bengaluru, supported by specialised women squads and traffic police.

Modern technology, including surveillance cameras and traffic monitoring systems, will be used to regulate crowd movement and prevent congestion in busy areas. Strict checks against drunk driving, dangerous riding and other traffic violations are also part of the plan.

Police officials said coordination has been established with other departments, including traffic police, fire and emergency services, and health authorities, to deal with any contingency.

Ensuring orderly celebrations

Senior officers said the objective of the extensive arrangements is to ensure that celebrations remain safe, orderly and enjoyable for everyone. “New Year is a time for joy and celebration, but public safety cannot be compromised. We want people to celebrate responsibly and respect the rights and safety of others,” an official said.

The police have appealed to citizens to cooperate with security measures, follow instructions issued by personnel on duty and immediately report any suspicious or inappropriate behaviour.

Conclusion

With high-definition surveillance, a dedicated war room, real-time monitoring and swift ground response, Bengaluru city police are aiming to set a strong example of proactive policing during New Year celebrations. Authorities expressed confidence that the integrated approach will help prevent incidents, protect vulnerable groups and ensure that the city ushers in the New Year in a safe and peaceful manner.
