Bengaluru: A day after a headless body was found on railway tracks near Baiyappanahalli, Bengaluru police identified the deceased as Vishwanath, a 25-year-old delivery executive from Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh. Police suspect the man’s severed head was dragged away from the railway tracks by stray dogs before it was recovered near a cricket ground about 200 metres away.
The incident, which initially puzzled investigators, is being treated as a case of suspected suicide, though police have registered a case of unnatural death and are continuing their investigation.
Head found hours after body
Police discovered the headless body on railway tracks on Tuesday night.
The following morning, locals found a severed human head near a cricket playground located around 200 metres from the railway tracks and alerted the authorities.
Investigators suspect stray dogs dragged the head from the railway tracks to the playground, complicating efforts to identify the deceased.
Following the recovery of the head, police were able to establish the victim’s identity.
Victim worked as delivery executive
The deceased has been identified as Vishwanath, who hailed from Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh.
Police said he had moved to Bengaluru in 2024 and was employed with an e-commerce delivery platform.
According to preliminary findings, Vishwanath was struck by a train near Baiyappanahalli between 8 pm and 9 pm on Tuesday.
The body was initially sent for post-mortem examination without the head. After recovering the severed head, police confirmed the identity of the deceased and informed his family.
Police suspect suicide
Initial investigations suggest Vishwanath had reportedly been involved in an argument with his romantic partner before the incident.
Based on the available evidence, police suspect the death was a case of suicide. However, officials said further investigation is underway to establish all the circumstances leading to the incident.
Unnatural death case registered
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield) Saidulu Adavath said an unnatural death case has been registered.
He stated that investigators believe the severed head recovered near the playground had been dragged there from the railway tracks by stray dogs.
Police are continuing to gather evidence and await the post-mortem report as part of the investigation.
