In a major crackdown on the online glorification of criminals, Bengaluru Police have identified nearly 1,500 social media accounts and over 1,000 reels and URLs that allegedly promote rowdy sheeters and gangsters as influential public figures.

According to senior police officials, the accounts frequently share videos, photographs and reels celebrating the activities of known offenders, including birthday events, rallies, fan gatherings and tribute posts. The content is believed to be contributing to the growing influence of criminal elements among impressionable youngsters.

Police target online glorification of criminals

The action is being spearheaded by the Organised Crime Wing (OCW) of the Central Crime Branch (CCB), which has written to social media platforms seeking the removal of objectionable content and, in several cases, the suspension of entire accounts.

Police said fan pages linked to several rowdy sheeters, including individuals with multiple criminal cases, have already been identified and removed. Investigators believe that many of these accounts are operated not by the accused themselves but by associates and supporters seeking to project them as local celebrities.

Youth under police radar

Officials expressed concern that a majority of followers engaging with such content belong to the 18-22 age group. Police said some youngsters were actively sharing posts, participating in fan groups and attending events organised by supporters of known offenders.

As part of the initiative, police have begun counselling such individuals and contacting their families. In certain cases, warnings have been issued and inquiries conducted to discourage participation in activities that glorify criminal behaviour.

Largest crackdown so far

Police described the current operation as significantly larger than previous drives, which typically resulted in the removal of only a few hundred accounts and posts. Authorities said the objective is to prevent criminals from using social media platforms to build influence, recruit supporters and cultivate an image of power.
