Bengaluru: The Bengaluru City Police have stepped up their crackdown on rowdy elements by conducting surprise raids, closely monitoring habitual offenders, and invoking stringent legal provisions to curb organised crime and anti-social activities across the city.
According to police data, Bengaluru has 6,815 rowdy sheeters, of whom 2,381 are currently active. As part of the intensified drive, police have also opened 172 new rowdy sheets over the past six months.
The city has 11 police divisions, with the East Division recording the highest number of active rowdy sheeters at 518, followed by the Southwest Division with 355 and the West Division with 275.
Surprise raids across multiple divisions
City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said police teams are carrying out simultaneous surprise visits to the residences of rowdy sheeters in two or three divisions at a time. The strategy is aimed at preventing offenders from escaping to other areas after learning about police inspections.
During the visits, officers verify the current occupation of rowdy sheeters, the vehicles they use, and other relevant details. The Central Crime Branch (CCB) is also monitoring habitual offenders and sharing intelligence with police stations across the city.
Strict legal action against habitual offenders
Police have invoked stringent laws, including the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act (KCOCA), the Goonda Act, and externment proceedings against habitual offenders to curb criminal activities.
The Commissioner said the police have also initiated Preventive Action Register (PAR) proceedings by binding rowdy sheeters with good behaviour bonds. Legal action has been initiated against those who violated the bond conditions.
