Property transactions in Bengaluru faced major disruption on Thursday as confusion over the transfer of 90 sub-registrars left several offices in disarray. Buyers and sellers thronged sub-registrar offices for New Year transactions, but disagreements between incumbent and newly posted officers hampered operations in at least 10 locations.

At the Gandhinagar sub-registrar office, a standoff between two sub-registrars resulted in halted registrations, with neither officer possessing system login credentials. The chaos stems from a December 10 government order transferring 90 senior sub-registrars across Bengaluru. Some incumbents challenged the move in court, citing untimely transfers disrupting their routines. Meanwhile, 32 of the transferees had already assumed their new roles, but a subsequent interim court order led to further confusion.

As transferred officers returned to their previous posts, they found themselves locked out of the system, lacking necessary login IDs. The state government sought clarity from the advocate-general, who advised granting login IDs to the newly transferred sub-registrars. Inspector General of Registration KA Dayananda acknowledged the conflicting court orders, stating, “While some transfers were stayed, another order mandated providing login IDs. We’ve issued credentials to all, but resistance from the incumbents persists.”

Officials assured that efforts are underway to resolve the issue swiftly to avoid inconvenience to the public.
