Traffic woes continue to plague many Asian cities, with Bengaluru and Pune ranking 6th and 7th, respectively, in the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index for Asia’s most congested cities. The report, which analyzed 387 cities worldwide, revealed commuters in Bengaluru lose 132 hours annually in traffic, with an average of 28 minutes to cover just 10 km. Pune residents face similar challenges, spending 128 extra hours annually in gridlock.

Other Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai ranked 44th and 54th globally, reflecting the widespread traffic issues in the country. London topped the global list as the worst city for traffic, highlighting congestion as a global urban problem.

Social media users reacted with both humor and frustration. A Bengaluru resident commented, “28 minutes for 10 km is a dream—it’s more like 4-5 km in that time.” Meanwhile, Punekars noted their traffic times often exceed the reported averages. Others pointed out the absence of Kolkata, which many believe should also feature on the list.

The report underscores the urgent need for effective traffic management and sustainable transportation solutions in India’s rapidly growing cities. As urbanization accelerates, addressing congestion remains critical for improving quality of life.
