Bengaluru is emerging as one of the biggest winners in India’s growing intercity bus travel market, with rising airfares prompting more travellers to switch to road transport.

According to the latest data released by redBus, the Karnataka capital witnessed a 15 per cent increase in travellers originating from the city between October 2025 and March 2026. The growth reinforces Bengaluru’s position as one of the country’s strongest and fastest-growing bus travel hubs.

Rising flight costs drive travellers to buses

The surge comes as airline ticket prices remain elevated across several domestic routes, encouraging passengers to seek more affordable alternatives.

Industry experts say organised bus operators have benefited significantly from this shift, offering improved comfort, wider route networks and competitive pricing. For many travellers, especially those making short- to medium-distance journeys, premium bus services have become an attractive option.

Women and Gen Z lead the trend

The data also points to changing travel patterns, with women travellers and Gen Z passengers increasingly opting for organised bus travel.

Improved safety measures, real-time tracking, digital booking platforms and better onboard amenities have helped make bus journeys more appealing to younger travellers and families.

The growth reflects broader changes in India’s travel ecosystem, where convenience, affordability and flexibility are becoming key decision-making factors.

Bengaluru remains a major travel hub

As a leading technology and business centre, Bengaluru generates significant travel demand across Karnataka and neighbouring states. Popular routes connecting cities such as Mangaluru, Mysuru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Coimbatore continue to see strong passenger traffic.

Travel industry observers believe the city’s strategic location and growing population will further strengthen demand for organised bus services in the coming years.

With infrastructure improving and more operators investing in premium services, road travel is expected to remain a preferred choice for many cost-conscious travellers even as air travel continues to expand.
