The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Bengaluru has collected more than Rs 71.73 crore in taxes and fines during a large-scale enforcement drive targeting transport violations across the city.
Officials said the crackdown focused on vehicles operating without proper registration, unpaid taxes, permit violations, and misuse of non-Karnataka registrations. More than 1,600 vehicles were reportedly seized during the operation.
Non-Karnataka vehicles under scrutiny
Authorities stated that a significant number of vehicles booked during the drive carried registrations from other states despite being used extensively within Karnataka. Transport officials noted that several vehicle owners had allegedly failed to pay applicable road taxes in the state.
The enforcement campaign also targeted commercial vehicles operating without valid permits and motorists violating transport regulations.
Major recovery through fines and taxes
According to transport department officials, the drive resulted in the recovery of Rs 71.73 crore through pending taxes, penalties, and fines. The operation was carried out across multiple locations in Bengaluru with the support of enforcement teams.
Officials said such inspections are necessary to ensure compliance with road transport rules and prevent revenue losses to the state.
Citizens react to strict enforcement
The crackdown has triggered mixed reactions among residents and motorists. While many supported stricter enforcement against tax evasion and illegal vehicle operations, others raised concerns regarding the process followed during inspections.
Transport authorities, however, maintained that enforcement drives would continue in the coming months to improve compliance and road safety standards in Bengaluru.
With vehicle numbers rapidly increasing in the city, officials say stricter monitoring is essential to regulate traffic systems and ensure accountability among vehicle ownersRs 71.73 crore during a major transport enforcement drive.
