After renaming Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South, the Karnataka government is now considering a proposal to rename Bengaluru Rural district as Bengaluru North. Sources say the move aims to replicate the branding and development push seen after the Ramanagara renaming.
The proposal will be discussed during the state cabinet meeting scheduled at Nandi Hills on Wednesday. Officials also confirmed that the cabinet will consider renaming Bagepalli town in Chikkaballapur district to Bhagyanagar.
Bengaluru Rural was originally part of the undivided Bengaluru district until it became a separate district on August 15, 1986. It was further split in 2007 to create Ramanagara. Today, Bengaluru Rural comprises Hoskote, Devanahalli, Doddaballapur, and Nelamangala taluks.
Local MLAs and ministers have argued that the ‘rural’ tag is misleading and discourages investment, especially since the district hosts major economic hubs like Kempegowda International Airport and industrial areas including Foxconn’s iPhone assembly plant in Devanahalli.
“A strong demand has emerged from MLAs and ministers who feel the name deters investors,” said an official familiar with the matter.
Separately, some groups have also suggested renaming the district after Tipu Sultan, who was born in Devanahalli.
Last month’s renaming of Ramanagara stirred mixed reactions, with supporters hoping for better infrastructure while critics worried about erasing cultural identity.
The cabinet’s decision this week will likely set the course for whether Bengaluru Rural gets a new name—and a fresh development narrative.
