A silent health crisis is gripping Bengaluru’s young adults — an alarming rise in accelerated hypertension cases, with patients as young as 25 landing in emergency rooms. Experts across leading hospitals report a steep 20–25% increase in such cases over the past few years.
Accelerated hypertension is a rapid and dangerous spike in blood pressure — often above 160/100 mm Hg, sometimes even crossing 180/120. If untreated within the critical four-hour “golden window,” it can lead to brain bleeds, strokes, heart failure, or kidney damage.
Dr. Basavaraj Utagi of Fortis Hospital shared that the city now sees 10+ under-40 hypertension cases daily, with more showing signs of advanced stages. He attributed this to a blend of urban habits — poor sleep, high stress, processed diets, smoking, alcohol, and sedentary routines.
Dr. Abhijit Kulkarni from Apollo Hospitals noted a worrying trend: “We see 3–4 young patients a day with no known history, arriving in critical condition. They didn’t even know they were hypertensive.”
Symptoms include sudden headaches, chest pain, breathlessness, vision disturbances, and dizziness. Doctors stress that once organ damage begins, it becomes a race against time.
Dr. VS Prakash (Ramaiah Institute) and Dr. Sreekanth Shetty (Sakra World) both emphasized early detection. Many patients appear fit but have dangerously high blood pressure. Regular health check-ups and awareness are essential to avoid fatal outcomes.
