Bengaluru: The Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground in Bengaluru is set to host the 80th Independence Day celebrations on Saturday, with Chief Minister D K Shivakumar scheduled to unfurl the National Flag, receive the Guard of Honour and deliver the Independence Day address.
The celebrations will bring together government officials, police personnel, students and members of the public for a programme featuring a ceremonial parade and cultural performances highlighting India’s freedom struggle and cultural heritage.
Flag hoisting and ceremonial parade
The National Flag will be hoisted at 9 am at the parade ground, following which the National Anthem will be played and the Guard of Honour will be presented.
Shivakumar will then inspect the parade before addressing the gathering on the occasion of Independence Day. The ceremonial proceedings are expected to underline the significance of the day while showcasing the preparedness and discipline of the participating contingents.
A march-past by various contingents will follow the chief minister’s address. Personnel from different departments and organisations are expected to participate in the ceremonial proceedings.
The Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground has traditionally served as one of Bengaluru’s prominent venues for the state’s Independence Day celebrations, drawing government representatives, invited guests and members of the public.
Nearly 800 students to participate
The celebrations will also feature a large cultural programme involving nearly 800 schoolchildren and students from educational institutions across Bengaluru.
The performances have been planned around patriotic themes and Karnataka’s cultural traditions. The programme will include Naada Geethe and Raitha Geethe, along with a Vande Mataram-Shanti Mantra Nruthya Roopaka.
Students will also present a performance titled The Glory of the Freedom Struggle, recalling India’s journey towards independence and the sacrifices made during the freedom movement.
Other performances include Akka Pade and a showcase by the Bharath Jodo Youth Association.
The participation of students is expected to add a strong cultural and educational dimension to the celebrations, allowing young people to take part in the Independence Day programme while highlighting India’s history and traditions.
The programme is expected to conclude with the distribution of prizes to participants and achievers.
Public asked to arrive early
Members of the public attending the Independence Day celebrations have been issued specific instructions regarding entry and seating arrangements.
Visitors have been asked to enter the parade ground through Gate 4, approaching via Cubbon Road from the Manipal Centre side. They have been advised to reach the venue well in advance and be seated by 8.30 am.
Authorities have stated that no one will be permitted to enter the parade ground after the stipulated time.
The early reporting requirement is intended to facilitate security checks and ensure that the ceremonial proceedings begin without disruption.
Citizens attending the programme have also been advised to follow the instructions issued by the police and event organisers.
Traffic police advise use of public transport
With parking facilities around the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground being limited, Bengaluru traffic police have advised members of the public to avoid bringing private vehicles wherever possible.
Citizens have been encouraged to use public transport and Namma Metro services to reach the venue.
The traffic advisory is aimed at reducing congestion around the parade ground and ensuring smoother movement of vehicles during the celebrations.
As a large number of people are expected to attend the event, commuters travelling through central Bengaluru have also been advised to plan their journeys accordingly.
The presence of large crowds, security arrangements and restrictions around the venue could affect traffic movement on roads surrounding the parade ground.
Senior officials review preparations
Senior officials from the city’s civic administration, district administration and police department reviewed arrangements ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
GBA Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao, Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner Kantaraju P S, Bengaluru Central City Corporation Commissioner G Jagadeesh and City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh were among the officials who reviewed preparations at the venue.
The review covered arrangements for the ceremonial programme, security, traffic management, public entry and other logistical requirements.
Police and civic authorities have been coordinating to ensure that the event is conducted smoothly while maintaining adequate security for dignitaries, participants and members of the public.
Security and crowd management
The Independence Day programme is expected to draw a large gathering, making security and crowd management an important part of the preparations.
Security personnel will regulate entry into the parade ground, while traffic police will manage vehicle movement in the surrounding areas.
The instruction that members of the public must be seated by 8.30 am is also expected to help authorities complete security checks before the flag-hoisting ceremony begins at 9 am.
