Bengaluru: The city’s skywatchers are in for a celestial treat as a total lunar eclipse will grace the skies on the night of September 7–8, with Bengaluru expected to enjoy one of the best views in the world.
Year’s last total lunar eclipse
This will be the final total lunar eclipse of 2025, making it a significant astronomical event. During the eclipse, the moon will gradually take on a reddish hue — a phenomenon caused by the Earth’s atmosphere filtering sunlight — earning it the title of a “blood moon.”
The highlight of the night will be the totality phase, lasting from 11:00 pm to 12:22 am (IST), when the moon will glow in brilliant shades of copper and crimson.
Public viewing in Bengaluru
To mark the occasion, the Curiouscity Discovery Centre is hosting an overnight public viewing session from 8:00 pm to 2:00 am. The programme will include telescopes for direct observation and live commentary by educators from Genex Space and Curiouscity.
Beyond stargazing, the evening will feature interactive sessions on the science, myths, and cultural stories surrounding eclipses, making it both educational and entertaining.

A rare night for skywatchers
Astronomers and educators have urged enthusiasts not to miss the event, given that the next total lunar eclipse visible from India may not occur for several years. With clear skies predicted, Bengaluru is poised for a spectacular night of cosmic wonder.
