Public spending on Bengaluru is estimated at a massive ₹38,455 crore for the financial year 2021-22 — more than ₹100 crore every day — yet citizens cannot view this in one transparent public record, according to a new report.
The estimate comes from Janaagraha, which said the figure had to be compiled manually using information spread across more than 70 documents from over 13 government agencies.
₹100 crore spent daily on city
The report highlights the scale of investment flowing into Bengaluru through multiple departments and agencies responsible for roads, transport, water supply, housing, sanitation and urban development.
At over ₹100 crore a day, the numbers underline Bengaluru’s importance as India’s technology capital and one of the country’s fastest-growing cities.
No single dashboard for citizens
Despite the huge spending, the report noted that no single official platform currently allows residents to track where funds are allocated, how much has been spent, or project-wise progress.
This means citizens, researchers and policymakers must rely on scattered records across multiple departments.
Need for transparency and coordination
Urban experts have often argued that Bengaluru’s development suffers not only from funding gaps, but from fragmented governance and overlapping authorities.
A unified spending dashboard could help improve accountability, planning and public trust while allowing residents to monitor key civic works.
Why it matters now
As Bengaluru faces persistent challenges including potholes, flooding, traffic congestion and waste management, citizens increasingly want clarity on how public money is being used.
The Janaagraha findings may renew calls for a transparent city finance system that matches Bengaluru’s growing scale and ambitions.
