Bengaluru is set to roll out an ambitious movement—Pedaluru, a five-year, people-powered initiative aimed at turning the city into India’s premier cycling hub. The campaign officially launched in 2024, building upon the momentum of the pre-pandemic 2018 ‘Ride for Safety’, which drew over 3,500 participants.

The highlight of this year’s campaign is a massive ride on June 1 at 6 am, beginning at the Karnataka Hockey Stadium on Langford Road. Coinciding with World Bicycle Day on June 5, this gathering expects over 5,000 riders, including citizens, artists, public figures, and policymakers, to come together in support of greener, healthier travel.

At the heart of Pedaluru lies support for the Karnataka Active Mobility Bill, a forward-looking policy advocating for safer walkways and dedicated cycling paths. The campaign’s roadmap—Ignite, Explore, Transform, Embrace, Lead—charts a path from raising awareness to full-fledged city-wide cycling adoption.

With achievements like the installation of 150+ bicycle racks, repair hubs at metro stations, and a rising base of 6,000+ daily riders, Pedaluru is proving that consistent small steps can drive lasting urban transformation.

Unlike typical protest-led activism, Pedaluru inspires change through celebration, collaboration, and design. Backed by civic bodies, corporate partners, colleges, and even international missions, the initiative is a rare blend of grassroots energy and institutional support.

By 2029, the vision is to have 1 lakh active cyclists, with robust participation from 100 companies and 200 neighbourhood groups.
