A software engineer in Bengaluru has triggered a social media debate after claiming that the management of his residential society deliberately shut down the apartment lift while he was moving household belongings into his rented home.
Siddhartha Mukherji shared a video on Instagram, alleging that the society management turned off the lift to prevent him and the movers from transporting furniture, causing inconvenience not only to him but also to other residents.
Techie questions society’s decision
In the video, Mukherji claimed he was shifting furniture and other household items to an upper floor when the society management objected, saying the activity would inconvenience other residents using the lift.
According to him, instead of regulating the movement or scheduling it at a suitable time, the management allegedly shut down the lift altogether.
The video also showed residents climbing the stairs after the lift was rendered inoperable, with the techie arguing that the decision created more inconvenience than it prevented.

Sharing the clip, Mukherji alleged that some apartment societies discriminate against tenants and accused the management of unnecessarily making life difficult for residents living on rent.
His post quickly gained traction on social media, with many users saying they had faced similar treatment from housing societies across the country.
Several commenters claimed that tenants are often treated differently from apartment owners, describing such incidents as common in gated communities.

However, not everyone agreed with the techie’s criticism. Some social media users pointed out that heavy furniture should not be transported in passenger lifts, as it can damage the lift mechanism and inconvenience all residents.
Others suggested that societies should have clear guidelines for house shifting, including designated timings and the use of service lifts wherever available, to balance the needs of both residents and those moving in or out.
