Bengaluru: A 27-year-old software professional allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Bengaluru, reportedly distressed over an astrologer’s prediction about her marriage, police said on Monday.

The incident took place on Friday at MEI Layout in Bagalagunte under the jurisdiction of Bagalagunte police station in north Bengaluru. The deceased has been identified as Vidyajyoti.

According to police, Vidyajyoti was in a relationship with a man belonging to another caste. Both families had reportedly agreed to their marriage in accordance with her wishes. Preparations for the wedding were said to be under discussion when the tragic incident occurred.

Astrologer’s prediction reportedly caused distress

Citing a preliminary inquiry, a senior police officer said that Vidyajyoti’s parents had recently consulted an astrologer regarding the couple’s future. The astrologer allegedly predicted that there could be misunderstandings between the couple two years into their marriage, which might eventually lead to separation.

In an attempt to prevent such an outcome, the astrologer reportedly advised the family to perform a nine-day religious ritual. Acting on this suggestion, the family undertook the ritual at their residence.

Police sources said that on the ninth and final day of the ritual, Vidyajyoti allegedly went into her room when her parents were not at home. Later in the evening, when she did not respond despite repeated knocks on the door, her father grew suspicious. He eventually broke open the door and found her hanging from a ceiling fan.

She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Unnatural death report registered

The Bagalagunte police have registered a UDR (Unnatural Death Report) case and initiated further investigation. Officials said statements from family members are being recorded to ascertain the sequence of events and determine the exact circumstances leading to the incident.

At this stage, police have indicated that there is no evidence of foul play. However, they are verifying all aspects, including the alleged emotional impact of the astrologer’s prediction on the young woman.

Neighbours described Vidyajyoti as a soft-spoken and hardworking individual. She had been employed with a private technology firm in Bengaluru and was reportedly managing both her professional and personal commitments.

Emotional vulnerability and social pressures

The incident has once again brought attention to the emotional pressures faced by young professionals and the continuing influence of astrological beliefs in matrimonial decisions in parts of India.

While astrology remains deeply embedded in cultural and social practices, experts have often cautioned against allowing predictions to create fear or anxiety, especially among individuals already dealing with stress. In many cases, speculative forecasts about marriage, career or health can have unintended psychological consequences.

Mental health professionals emphasise that relationship-related anxieties, family expectations and social pressures can combine to create overwhelming emotional distress. In such situations, timely counselling and open communication within families can play a crucial role in preventing extreme steps.

Investigation continues

Police officials said they are awaiting further details, including post-mortem findings, to complete the inquest proceedings. They have urged the public not to speculate about the incident while the investigation is ongoing.

The tragic death of the young techie has left her family devastated and has shocked residents of the locality. Authorities have reiterated the importance of seeking emotional support during times of distress and advised families to be sensitive when dealing with issues related to marriage and future predictions.

Conclusion

As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for greater mental health awareness and balanced perspectives when dealing with cultural beliefs. Community members and experts alike stress that emotional wellbeing must be prioritised over fear arising from unverified predictions.
