A techie from Bengaluru recently fell victim to a gift card scam, losing ₹4.5 lakh after receiving a fraudulent WhatsApp message that appeared to come from his boss. The engineer, eager to impress and relatively new to the company, unwittingly participated in the scam after being instructed to purchase Apple voucher codes.

The Scam Unfolds

On October 13, the victim received a message claiming to be from his boss, stating, “I am currently engaged in a conference call meeting and I need you to run a quick assignment. We need to provide our clients in India with some gift cards; can you confirm if we can get Apple App Store cards from Paytm?” The message prompted the techie to act quickly. He purchased the requested vouchers, which amounted to ₹4.35 lakh, and promptly shared the codes as directed.

Realisation and Action Taken

The techie’s moment of realisation came when he mentioned the gift request to someone in the HR department. He was informed that his actual boss had not made such a request, revealing the message to be a scam. Recognising the gravity of the situation, he filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Bellandur Cyber Crime branch the following day. The police have since initiated an investigation into the case and have issued warnings to others about similar scams.

Challenges Faced by the Victim

In the aftermath of the scam, the victim faced significant challenges due to the limited hours of Apple’s customer support, which operates only from Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM. He expressed frustration over the inability to block the compromised Apple IDs or recover the misused funds immediately. “I had to wait until morning for Apple support to open,” he lamented, highlighting the urgent need for timely assistance in such cases.

Conclusion

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in online communications, particularly during festive seasons when people are more inclined to participate in gift exchanges. As scams like this become increasingly sophisticated, individuals are urged to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of such requests, especially when they involve financial transactions. The Bengaluru Cyber Crime police are continuing their efforts to investigate and raise awareness about online fraud, aiming to protect other potential victims from falling prey to similar schemes.
