A Bengaluru tenant’s Reddit post describing a heated argument with his landlord over air conditioner usage has gone viral, drawing attention to the city’s growing rental frustrations.

The tenant, who lives in Koramangala, claimed he pays ₹35,000 per month for a furnished studio apartment with water and electricity included. However, he alleged that the flat lacked proper ventilation, making it extremely uncomfortable without continuous use of the air conditioner.

Tenant says landlord abused him

In the viral Reddit post titled “My Landlord abused me”, the tenant said the situation escalated after the landlord accused him of overusing the AC and increasing electricity costs.

According to the tenant, the landlord allegedly called him “stupid” and an “idiot” during the argument. The tenant argued that electricity expenses were already factored into the high monthly rent and claimed the apartment was nearly unliveable without cooling due to poor airflow.

The post quickly gained traction online, especially among young professionals who have moved to Bengaluru for work and faced similar housing issues.

Social media users share similar experiences

Many Reddit users responded by sharing their own experiences with high rents, strict landlords, and cramped apartments in Bengaluru’s popular neighbourhoods such as Koramangala, HSR Layout, and Indiranagar.

Some users criticised landlords for charging premium rents for poorly ventilated homes, while others suggested that newcomers often struggle to find decent accommodation near major tech hubs.

Several commenters also pointed out that Bengaluru’s increasing housing demand has made tenants compromise on space, comfort, and affordability.

Rental concerns continue in Bengaluru

The viral incident has once again highlighted concerns around Bengaluru’s rapidly rising rental market, particularly for young professionals relocating to the city.

With demand remaining high in technology corridors, many residents say they are forced to pay steep rents for small apartments while dealing with restrictive rental conditions and stressful landlord-tenant relationships.
