Bengaluru is set for a major sporting upgrade, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah approving a ₹1,650-crore sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra. The centrepiece will be a cutting-edge cricket stadium seating 80,000 spectators, making it the second-largest in India after Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, reported The Economic Times.
The move follows the June 4 stampede tragedy at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where 11 people lost their lives during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebrations. The incident highlighted severe shortcomings in crowd management at the 32,000-capacity venue.
A Justice John Michael Cunha Commission inquiry found that Chinnaswamy, spread over just 17 acres, lacks adequate infrastructure for large-scale events. It recommended shifting high-profile matches to bigger venues with better parking, wider entry points, and advanced crowd control systems.
In the aftermath, the Maharaja Trophy 2025 was moved to Mysuru after police refused clearance for matches. The city’s hosting of five Women’s Cricket World Cup matches later this year, as well as possible IPL 2026 games, is now uncertain.
The proposed Surya City sports complex will feature modern amenities, vast parking areas, and strong transport links, designed to safely accommodate massive crowds and global tournaments.
Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar earlier stressed the need for a new stadium, noting that Chinnaswamy’s central location limits expansion and crowd handling capacity.
