Siddaramaiah is set to lay the foundation stone for a massive new international cricket stadium in Bengaluru on May 23, marking the beginning of a major sports infrastructure project for the city.
The upcoming stadium, planned in Anekal on Bengaluru’s outskirts, is expected to have a seating capacity of around 80,000, making it India’s second-largest cricket stadium after the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Rs 943 crore project planned in Anekal
According to reports, the stadium project is valued at nearly Rs 943 crore and is expected to be completed within the next three years.
The venue will reportedly be constructed on 75 acres of land owned by the Karnataka Housing Board in the fourth phase of Suryanagar near the Tamil Nadu border.
The tender process for the project is also expected to conclude on May 23.
Bengaluru’s growing need for a larger venue
Currently, Bengaluru hosts major cricket matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which has a seating capacity of around 32,000.
Officials believe the existing stadium is no longer sufficient for the city’s growing demand during international matches and IPL games.
The decision to develop a larger stadium reportedly gained urgency following the tragic stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2025, where 11 people lost their lives.
Metro connectivity also planned
Authorities are also reportedly planning a dedicated metro spur line connecting the proposed stadium as part of Bengaluru’s upcoming long-distance metro expansion plans.
Cricket fans across Karnataka have reacted with excitement to the announcement, with many hoping the new venue will help Bengaluru host more large-scale international tournaments and high-profile matches in the coming years
