Bengaluru: A tragic incident in Kundalahalli Colony, Bengaluru, claimed the life of Pranav, a one-year-eight-month-old boy, on Friday evening. The accident occurred when a cement mixer truck snagged an overhead electrical wiring pole, pulling down the roof parapet wall of the family’s house.
Incident details
The boy was the only child of Siddappa and Lavanya, a couple working as labourers in the city. The family resided in a house with an asphaltic roof. According to reports, Lavanya tried to save her son, but the falling debris struck his head, causing fatal injuries. Pranav was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead by doctors.
Truck driver negligence
The HAL Law and Order police registered a case against the truck driver, who abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene, fearing backlash from agitated residents. Investigations revealed that the truck was being used for construction work at a nearby building. The accident occurred around 3:15 pm, when the driver allegedly negligently entangled the vehicle with an electric wire connected to a BESCOM pole.
Despite locals shouting warnings, the driver continued driving, causing an aluminium pipe fixed to the parapet roof to dislodge, leading to the collapse of the wall. Pranav, who was playing outside at the time, was struck by the debris.
Aftermath and investigation
The toddler’s body has been sent to Bowring Hospital for postmortem. Another girl and Lavanya sustained minor injuries in the incident. Residents allege that while the driver had passed through the area earlier for work, his return journey was marked by negligence, resulting in the tragic accident.
The police are making efforts to apprehend the truck driver, who remains at large.
Conclusion
This incident highlights the dangers of negligent construction vehicle operations in residential areas and raises concerns over safety measures and oversight around urban construction sites. Authorities are expected to investigate the matter thoroughly to ensure accountability.
