Bengaluru: Bengaluru‘s notorious traffic congestion is no longer just a daily inconvenience but an emerging public health concern, with medical experts warning that prolonged hours on the road are increasing the risk of migraines, stress, hearing problems and other lifestyle-related illnesses among commuters.

Doctors say long commutes, combined with constant exposure to noise, air pollution, irregular meals, dehydration and poor sleep, are placing significant physical and mental strain on residents who spend hours navigating the city’s congested roads every day.

Traffic linked to migraines and stress

Neurologists explain that while traffic does not directly cause migraines, it can trigger attacks in people who are already susceptible. Chronic stress, loud noise, prolonged sitting, poor posture, skipped meals and disrupted sleep are among the most common factors contributing to recurring headaches.

Medical experts also note that Bengaluru’s demanding work culture, coupled with lengthy commutes and irregular work schedules, is making migraine attacks increasingly common among working professionals.

Noise pollution affects hearing

Experts have also raised concerns over constant exposure to traffic noise, which often ranges between 70 and 100 decibels in busy parts of the city. Such prolonged exposure can lead to tinnitus, reduced hearing ability and, in severe cases, permanent hearing loss.

Doctors warn that commuters who increase the volume of their earphones to block out traffic noise may unknowingly cause further damage to their hearing. Young professionals and regular commuters are considered particularly vulnerable.

Experts advise preventive measures

Health specialists recommend maintaining regular meal timings, staying hydrated, getting adequate sleep and managing stress through exercise or relaxation techniques. They also advise limiting headphone volume, using hearing protection where necessary and seeking medical attention if symptoms such as frequent headaches or ringing in the ears persist.

As Bengaluru continues to grapple with growing traffic congestion, experts say addressing its health impacts is becoming just as important as improving the city’s transport infrastructure.
