Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Traffic Police registered 539 cases of drunk driving and overspeeding during a five-day special enforcement drive conducted across the city from October 19 to 23, as part of efforts to curb traffic violations and improve road safety.

The drive was carried out by officers from all 53 traffic police stations in Bengaluru. According to a press note issued on Monday, the police checked 24,243 vehicles during the operation and booked motorists found violating traffic rules.

Of the total cases registered, 369 involved driving under the influence of alcohol, while 170 cases were booked for overspeeding. The police also collected fines amounting to Rs 1.72 lakh in connection with overspeeding violations.

The enforcement drive focused on two major traffic violations that can increase the risk of road accidents and endanger motorists, passengers and pedestrians.

369 cases registered for drunk driving

During the five-day operation, traffic police registered 369 cases against motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol.

Drunk driving remains a major road safety concern because alcohol can affect a driver’s judgement, coordination and reaction time. These effects can make it difficult to respond to sudden changes in traffic conditions, increasing the likelihood of collisions.

By checking more than 24,000 vehicles during the drive, the police sought to identify offenders and discourage motorists from driving after consuming alcohol.

The participation of all 53 traffic police stations enabled enforcement across different parts of the city. The operation formed part of broader efforts to improve compliance with traffic regulations and promote responsible driving.

Motorists are expected to avoid driving after consuming alcohol and make alternative travel arrangements when necessary. Such precautions can help protect not only drivers and their passengers but also other road users.

170 overspeeding cases booked

The traffic police registered another 170 cases against motorists for exceeding speed limits during the special drive.

Overspeeding reduces the time available to react to unexpected situations and can increase the severity of a collision. At higher speeds, drivers may find it more difficult to maintain control of their vehicles, particularly in congested urban traffic or when pedestrians and other vehicles enter their path.

The police collected Rs 1.72 lakh in fines in connection with the overspeeding cases.

The crackdown was intended to deter motorists from exceeding prescribed speed limits and encourage compliance with road safety rules. Enforcement against speeding is particularly important in urban areas, where traffic conditions can change rapidly and different categories of road users share limited space.

The police did not provide a separate breakdown of the locations where the overspeeding violations were detected in the information released.

Police aim to improve road safety

The special enforcement drive ran from October 19 to 23 and involved traffic officers across Bengaluru. By combining checks for drunk driving and overspeeding, the police sought to address violations that can have serious consequences for public safety.

The 24,243 vehicles checked during the operation reflect the scale of the enforcement effort. The 539 cases registered across the two categories also underline the need for continued monitoring and compliance with traffic regulations.

The Bengaluru Traffic Police said the enforcement drive would continue in the coming days.

Motorists have been urged to follow speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and comply with traffic rules. Continued enforcement, alongside responsible driving, remains important to reducing preventable accidents and making Bengaluru’s roads safer for everyone.
