Bengaluru: Once a humble summer staple, the refreshing ice apple or Thaati Nungu has now become a luxury fruit in Bengaluru, retailing at ₹50 per shell — a sharp 65% rise from last year.

The seasonal fruit, prized for its cooling and hydrating properties, is facing a price surge driven by three key factors: growing awareness of its health benefits, rising demand due to soaring city temperatures, and increased transport and logistics expenses. Vendors reveal that Nungu is sourced mainly from Tamil Nadu regions like Coimbatore, Vellore, and coastal belts, and transportation costs — including inter-state taxes and tolls — significantly inflate the final price.

Velu, a street vendor in Sudhama Nagar, noted that while the fruit costs ₹25–30 in Tamil Nadu, it reaches Bengaluru at nearly double the rate. Shanmugam, a vendor near Richmond Park, echoed this, pointing to high landing costs as a reason for the inflated prices. Yet, he added, daily sales remain strong — with around 10 kg sold each day.

The fruit is gaining popularity among health-conscious residents. Imran Mohammed from Shanthinagar shared he now chooses ice apples over processed snacks. Despite online offers, he prefers buying from street vendors for the freshness. Revathi, a tuition teacher in Banaswadi, said, “It’s still cheaper than tender coconut and very filling.”

Packed with essential vitamins and minerals, ice apples are known for aiding digestion, hydration, and skin issues, making them a nutritious remedy during the scorching summer.
