In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a 64-year-old woman in Bengaluru has regained pain-free movement following the city’s first mobile bearing Total Ankle Replacement (TAR) surgery at Narayana Health City. This innovative procedure, performed by Dr. Shekar Mudramaiah, an expert in orthopaedic surgery, has transformed the life of Jacinta Agnes Mascarenhas, who had been suffering from severe ankle arthritis.
A Revolutionary Procedure
Ankle arthritis is a condition where the cartilage in the joint wears down, leading to pain, swelling, and limited mobility. It can stem from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, injuries, infections, or other factors. In advanced cases where traditional treatments fail, TAR is a promising solution for pain relief and restored movement.
Dr. Mudramaiah explained that Mascarenhas, who had been active earlier, was unable to walk freely due to worsening arthritis in her left ankle. Although ankle fusion was suggested, which would relieve pain but result in a stiff joint, Mascarenhas sought a method that would allow her to regain natural movement.
After consulting Dr. Mudramaiah, TAR was chosen as the best option. The complex surgery replaces the damaged joint with an artificial implant, maintaining the ankle’s natural range of motion.
Successful Recovery
After the surgery, Mascarenhas showed remarkable progress:
- Day 1: She began moving with assistance.
- Week 2: The surgical wound healed.
- Week 6: She walked independently.
- Now: Mascarenhas is living a pain-free, active life again.
This breakthrough surgery marks a significant step in making advanced ankle treatments available to Indian patients.
