Bengaluru: Raj Bhavan to welcome public for guided tours
Raj Bhavan, Bengaluru’s iconic 19th-century building, has long been a “look-from-afar” attraction due to its high walls and tight security. Soon, visitors will be able to step inside and take guided walks through the historic premises, as announced by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC).
“We have received approval from Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to begin walking tours inside Raj Bhavan. We are currently surveying the premises to determine which spots can be shown to tourists and how long the tour will take,” said Srinath K S, general manager (transport) of KSTDC, who is coordinating the project.
Riding on the success of Vidhana Soudha tours
KSTDC is introducing the Raj Bhavan tours after witnessing the popularity of the Vidhana Soudha guided walks, launched three months ago. Between June 1 and August 24, the corporation received 3,830 bookings for Vidhana Soudha tours—1,324 for Kannada and 2,506 for English sessions.
“The response has been overwhelming. Slots sell out within two hours of opening the bookings,” Srinath said. He also revealed plans to introduce guided tours at Nandi Hills, where visitors could explore the hilltop in buggies.
A glimpse into history
Raj Bhavan was built between 1840 and 1842 by Sir Mark Cubbon as a private residence for a British officer serving as commissioner. Known initially as the Residency, the building housed several British commissioners during colonial times.
Post-independence, it functioned as a guest house hosting prominent leaders, including India’s first President, Rajendra Prasad. Eleanor Roosevelt, former First Lady of the United States, also stayed here during her India tour. Later, when Jayachamaraja Wodeyar became the Governor of Madras State, the building ceased to serve as a guest house and was eventually transformed into Raj Bhavan, the official residence for Karnataka’s governors.
Conclusion
The introduction of guided walks at Raj Bhavan will offer residents and tourists a rare opportunity to explore a historic and architecturally significant landmark, enriching Bengaluru’s heritage tourism. With planning underway, KSTDC aims to make the tours both informative and accessible, adding another cultural attraction to the city’s tourism portfolio.
