A new report highlights that three of Bengaluru’s five deadliest crash hotspots are in the city’s northern region, which also accounted for over a third of road fatalities in 2023.
The BTP 2023 Road Safety Report, unveiled at a symposium by Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit and NIMHANS, revealed alarming statistics. Bengaluru recorded its highest fatal crashes since 2007, with 894 accidents claiming 921 lives. Pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists made up 91% of victims.
Key Findings:
🚨 Deadly Roads: Police flagged 43 blackspots and 24 high-risk corridors.
⚠️ Speeding Issue: 31% of vehicles exceeded speed limits.
🛵 Helmet Non-Compliance: Outside city limits, only 11% of motorcyclists wore helmets correctly.
📊 Risk Perception: 73% of drivers admitted to exceeding speed limits, while 58% felt safe doing so.
