Bengaluru: Despite the PM Rooftop Solar Scheme (Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana) offering substantial savings and environmental benefits, only 68,000 out of 92 lakh Bescom-connected homes in Bengaluru have switched to solar power.

Horamavu Leads the Way

A residents’ association in Horamavu is taking the initiative to educate and encourage solar adoption. Inspired by its success, many Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) across the city are following suit.

At Trinity Enclave Layout, 25 out of 250 homes have already installed solar panels, with more joining soon. Trinity Enclave Residents’ Association (TERA) has played a pivotal role in this transition.

Minimal Investment, Maximum Savings

According to TERA president G Kochu Shankar, a family pays just ₹10,000 upfront while leveraging government incentives. After repaying the loan, they enjoy free electricity for 20 years.

A 3 KW rooftop solar system, costing ₹1.8 lakh, qualifies for a ₹78,000 subsidy. Nationalized banks offer loans at 7% interest, payable in EMIs matching current power bills. Loan repayment is completed in 4-5 years, after which the household enjoys zero electricity bills.

Bengaluru Needs More Awareness

While RWAs across Horamavu and other areas are joining the movement, Shankar believes public awareness remains low in Karnataka. States like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have been more effective in promoting the scheme.
