The BBMP has officially requested Bangalore University (BU) to transfer 25 acres of land at its Jnanabharathi campus for the construction of a 250-metre-tall skydeck, set to be South Asia’s tallest. The Brand Bengaluru initiative aims to redefine the city’s skyline, attract tourists and investors, and boost revenue.
Initially, multiple locations—including NGEF (Benniganahalli) and KSDL (Yeshwantpur)—were considered but rejected due to aviation height restrictions imposed by HAL. Kommaghatta and Hemmigepura (NICE Road) were also explored, but concerns over student disruptions and airspace regulations forced reconsideration. Eventually, the Jnanabharathi campus, strategically located near Mysuru Road, Kengeri Railway, and Metro stations, emerged as the most viable option.
The land, spanning survey numbers 94, 95, 128, and 130, is crucial for ensuring a swift project launch. However, opposition within Bangalore University remains strong, with concerns that the skydeck’s presence could disrupt academic life and compromise student safety.
The project draws inspiration from New York City’s Edge skydeck, which Deputy CM DK Shivakumar visited last year. Initially pegged at ₹250 crore, the estimated cost has now doubled to ₹500 crore. The government is currently finalizing the revenue-sharing model to balance land value and construction expenses.
