Bengaluru, India’s tech epicenter, is globally recognized for its vast pool of skilled software engineers—but not for their paychecks. A new report by WeAreCity, published through UnboxingBLR, reveals that software professionals in Bengaluru earn an average of just $12,000 annually, making them some of the most affordable tech talent worldwide.
This figure stands in sharp contrast to global benchmarks. For instance, software engineers in Silicon Valley command average salaries of $125,000—over ten times what their Bengaluru peers make. Even the worldwide average of $46,000 highlights the disparity, positioning Bengaluru far below the international pay scale.
Tech hubs across the globe offer substantially higher compensation. Engineers in Tel Aviv average $77,000, those in Toronto earn around $75,000, and Sydney professionals make approximately $78,000 annually. Even within Asia, cities like Tokyo ($62,000), Seoul ($51,000), and Singapore ($47,000) offer salaries four to five times greater than those found in Bengaluru.
Despite being a global IT outsourcing hub and innovation hotspot, Bengaluru’s wage levels underscore a major imbalance in the global tech economy. While companies worldwide benefit from the city’s cost-effective engineering services, questions arise about wage stagnation and the long-term sustainability of such low compensation for highly skilled professionals.
As the world leans more on Indian tech talent, the pay gap between East and West continues to spark debate—especially in a city known for powering global software solutions.
