Bengaluru: A 26-year-old employee of Biocon Biologics was found dead on Tuesday evening after an incident at the company’s office building in Electronics City, police said. The deceased has been identified as S Anantha Kumar, a resident of Banashankari, who was working in the finance department of the biotechnology firm.
According to police officials, the incident occurred at around 5 pm within the company’s campus. Kumar was reportedly present at the office during regular working hours and was seen using his mobile phone shortly before the incident. He later went to the cafeteria terrace located on the fifth floor of the building, where he is believed to have taken the extreme step.
Incident under investigation
Police said that no suicide note was found at the spot. The body was shifted to a private hospital for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death and to rule out any other possibilities. Officers added that the precise circumstances and reasons leading to the incident are not yet clear.
“We are investigating all angles. At this stage, it is too early to conclude what prompted the incident,” a senior police officer said. Statements of colleagues, supervisors and family members are expected to be recorded as part of the investigation.
Initial inquiries indicate that Kumar was on duty on Tuesday and there were no immediate reports of any altercation or unusual behaviour at the workplace prior to the incident. Police said CCTV footage from the premises is also being examined to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Police seek clarity on circumstances
Authorities said the investigation will focus on understanding whether the deceased was under any personal or professional stress. “We will look into his work environment, recent interactions and any other factors that could have contributed,” the officer added.
The Electronics City police have registered a case of unnatural death and have taken up further investigation as per procedure. The post-mortem report is expected to provide more clarity in the coming days.
Company expresses grief
Biocon Biologics, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young employee. The company conveyed its condolences to Kumar’s family and said it was extending all possible support during this difficult time.
“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate demise of our colleague. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” the statement said. The company added that as the matter is currently under official investigation, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.
Sources within the company said internal communication was issued to employees acknowledging the incident and offering counselling support to staff members who may be affected.
Growing focus on mental health at workplaces
The incident has once again brought attention to the importance of mental health awareness and support systems in high-pressure work environments, particularly in the corporate and technology sectors. Experts have repeatedly stressed the need for organisations to create open channels for employees to seek help and counselling without fear of stigma.
While police have not linked the incident to workplace-related stress, they said all aspects would be examined before drawing conclusions. “It is important not to speculate. The investigation will determine the facts,” an official said.
Appeal for sensitivity
Police and company officials have urged the public and media to avoid speculation and respect the privacy of the bereaved family. They also emphasised the importance of addressing mental health concerns proactively and seeking help when needed.
If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress, professional help and support services are available through local helplines and counselling centres.
Conclusion
As investigations continue, authorities are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the Biocon employee. The incident has left colleagues and the wider corporate community in shock, underscoring the need for compassion, awareness and robust mental health support systems at workplaces.
