A political storm has erupted in Karnataka after the BJP accused the state government of irregularities in Bengaluru’s solid waste management project, alleging a scam worth nearly Rs 39,000 crore linked to long-term garbage processing contracts.
A BJP delegation led by Leader of Opposition R Ashoka has submitted a complaint to Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, seeking an independent investigation into the tendering process and project cost escalation.
BJP questions tender process
According to the complaint, the project was awarded under suspicious circumstances after multiple rounds of bidding. BJP leaders alleged that bidders who were initially declared ineligible were later considered eligible, raising concerns about transparency.
The Opposition has also questioned the role of Hyderabad-based Ramky Group, claiming the company was favoured during the tender process. The firm has previously faced criticism over waste management issues linked to the Mavallipura landfill controversy.
Cost escalation under scrutiny
The BJP alleged that the project’s financial estimates were significantly revised without adequate justification. It claimed the tipping fee and overall project costs increased sharply, placing a substantial burden on public finances.
Opposition leaders have also raised concerns over the purchase of land for waste management facilities, alleging inflated compensation and procedural violations.
The complaint further questions changes made to project reports and consultant appointments during the tender process.
Demand for independent probe
R Ashoka and other BJP leaders have demanded that the tender process be investigated by an independent agency under judicial supervision. They have sought a temporary halt to the project until the inquiry is completed.
BJP national spokespersons Shehzad Poonawalla and Pradeep Bhandari have also criticised the government, alleging large-scale corruption in the waste management sector.
Government yet to respond
The Karnataka government has not yet issued an official response to the allegations. Meanwhile, the Opposition has called for a detailed examination of financial records, tender documents and approval processes connected to the project.
