Bengaluru: Tension flared outside the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office in Bengaluru after an egg was hurled at BJP MLA B P Harish while he was on his way to participate in a party protest on Wednesday. The legislator alleged that Congress workers assaulted him during the incident.

The BJP had organised the protest in response to a Youth Congress demonstration over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, the police lathi-charge on protesters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, and the detention of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders.

MLA alleges attack by Congress workers

Speaking to the media after the incident, Harish, the MLA from Harihara, said he was unfamiliar with the location of the KPCC office and had reached the venue after his driver identified the address.

“I got down from the car and started walking towards the office. Congress workers surrounded me, shouted slogans and threw an egg that struck my head. Four people assaulted me before the police intervened,” Harish alleged.

He claimed that police personnel at the scene rescued him from the crowd and prevented the situation from escalating further.

Protest witnessed high political tension

The confrontation took place amid heightened political tensions between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP. The BJP demonstration was organised as a counter-protest against the Youth Congress agitation, which raised concerns over alleged NEET examination irregularities, the police action against protesters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, and the detention of senior Congress leaders during the protest.

Security was tightened around the KPCC office as workers from both parties gathered in large numbers.

Police monitoring the situation

Police maintained order at the protest site and ensured that the situation remained under control following the alleged assault. No official statement had been issued regarding Harish’s allegations at the time of reporting, and it was not immediately clear whether any complaints had been registered.

Further details are awaited as authorities continue to monitor the developments.
