Bengaluru: The Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), J Ravishankar, on Wednesday inspected the ongoing works on the elevated section of the Pink Line as part of a regular progress review and quality assurance exercise.
The inspection focused on assessing construction progress, adherence to safety protocols, engineering standards and overall preparedness of the project ahead of its proposed commissioning.
According to a statement issued by BMRCL, the review covered civil works, station development, viaduct construction, system installations and other associated infrastructure components along the 7.5-km elevated stretch.
Focus on safety and quality
Officials said the visit was part of BMRCL’s periodic monitoring mechanism to ensure that all works meet prescribed technical and safety standards. During the inspection, the Managing Director reviewed the pace of construction, structural integrity of the viaducts and the status of station buildings.
Particular attention was reportedly given to compliance with safety measures at construction sites, including worker safety practices and traffic management around project zones.
BMRCL has been under pressure to expedite progress on the Pink Line, which is expected to significantly enhance connectivity across key parts of the city once operational.
7.5-km stretch targeted for May
The corporation is aiming to commission the 7.5-km elevated stretch by May this year. However, officials indicated that the timeline will depend on obtaining necessary statutory clearances, particularly for the new train sets that will operate on the route.
Before passenger services can commence, the line must undergo mandatory inspections and safety certifications from relevant authorities. Trial runs, signalling tests and system integration checks are also part of the pre-commissioning process.
Sources said that the arrival and clearance of new rolling stock will be a critical factor in meeting the targeted deadline.
Key addition to metro network
The Pink Line is one of the major corridors under expansion of the Namma Metro network and is expected to ease traffic congestion in several busy zones of Bengaluru.
Once operational, the corridor will improve last-mile connectivity and reduce travel time for commuters who currently depend on road transport in congested areas.
BMRCL officials reiterated their commitment to completing the project within the planned timeframe while maintaining high standards of safety and construction quality.
Awaiting statutory approvals
While civil works on the elevated section are progressing, final commissioning will hinge on approvals from statutory bodies responsible for metro rail safety certification.
The Managing Director’s inspection is seen as a step towards ensuring readiness for the final stages of execution. Officials said further reviews will be conducted periodically to monitor progress and address bottlenecks.
As Bengaluru continues to expand its metro footprint, timely completion of the Pink Line’s elevated stretch is expected to play a key role in strengthening the city’s public transport infrastructure.
