Several people were injured after a Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) electric bus rammed into the rear of a stationary Vayu Vajra airport bus near K.R. Circle during Saturday morning’s peak traffic hours.

The collision left the front portion of the electric bus extensively damaged, trapping the driver inside the mangled cabin and triggering a major rescue operation.

Driver rescued after being trapped

According to BMTC officials, the impact critically injured the electric bus driver, who remained trapped inside the vehicle. Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services Department, along with police teams, worked to extricate him before he was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

At least five passengers sustained injuries in the accident and were admitted to St. Martha’s Hospital. Rescue teams also saved a woman passenger who remained trapped inside the damaged bus for nearly an hour before being pulled to safety.

Mechanical failure suspected

Preliminary investigations suggest the accident may have been caused by a mechanical failure. However, officials said a detailed technical inspection is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.

The stationary Vayu Vajra airport bus was parked near K.R. Circle when the BMTC electric bus crashed into its rear, causing severe damage to the front of the vehicle.

Probe launched into accident

The accident led to heavy traffic congestion around K.R. Circle as police diverted vehicles while cranes removed the damaged buses from the road.

Karnataka Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh, along with senior BMTC officials, visited the injured passengers at the hospital and reviewed their condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and officials said the findings of the technical inspection will determine the cause of the accident and any further action to be taken.
