The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is exploring a new advertising strategy by planning to place advertisements on the back of passenger tickets in an effort to strengthen its non-fare revenue streams.

The move comes after BMTC already expanded large-scale advertising across its buses through full-body commercial wraps and promotional branding.

New revenue strategy for BMTC

Officials believe ticket-back advertisements could generate additional income without increasing passenger fares.

The transport corporation has been actively searching for alternative revenue models as operational costs continue to rise while maintaining affordable public transport services across Bengaluru.

According to reports, the advertising space on tickets may be offered to businesses, brands, and service providers seeking visibility among lakhs of daily commuters.

Non-fare income becoming important

Public transport agencies across India are increasingly depending on non-fare revenue sources such as advertisements, station branding, digital displays, and commercial partnerships to improve financial sustainability.

BMTC has already experimented with multiple advertising formats on buses and at bus shelters over recent years.

Experts say ticket advertisements could offer advertisers highly targeted visibility since BMTC serves a vast cross-section of Bengaluru’s daily commuters, including office-goers, students, and shoppers.

Balancing revenue and commuter experience

While the initiative is expected to help generate funds, some commuters online questioned whether excessive commercialisation could eventually affect passenger convenience and readability of tickets.

Others, however, welcomed the move if it helps improve public transport services without increasing ticket prices.

BMTC remains one of India’s largest public bus transport networks and plays a critical role in Bengaluru’s daily urban mobility amid rising traffic congestion and growing dependence on public transport
