Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has suspended a bus conductor after a video allegedly showing him pushing a passenger out of a bus and physically assaulting him went viral on social media.
The incident reportedly took place on August 2, prompting the transport corporation to initiate disciplinary action pending a detailed departmental inquiry.
BMTC orders immediate suspension
In an official statement, BMTC said it had taken serious note of the widely circulated video, which allegedly depicts the on-duty conductor pushing a passenger out of the bus before physically assaulting him.
Considering the public concern generated by the footage, the corporation placed the conductor under suspension as a preliminary administrative measure to ensure a fair and impartial investigation.
BMTC clarified that the suspension does not prejudge the outcome of the inquiry.
Departmental inquiry launched
The corporation has ordered a comprehensive departmental inquiry to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The investigation will include statements from the conductor, the passenger involved and eyewitnesses. Officials will also examine CCTV footage from the bus, where available, along with other relevant evidence before arriving at a conclusion.
Zero tolerance for passenger misconduct
Reiterating its commitment to passenger safety, BMTC said it follows a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, discourteous behaviour and any act that compromises the dignity, safety or rights of commuters.
The transport body added that if the allegations are proven during the inquiry, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against the conductor in accordance with applicable service rules and regulations.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users calling for strict action against misconduct involving public transport staff and urging authorities to ensure the safety and respectful treatment of passengers.
